THE PROBLEM WITH ADVERTISING

mardi 28 août 2018

I am 25 years old now and obviously, I've grown up in front of the T.V. Of all of the absolute perks of growing up with so much advertising, I would like to talk about the problem with confusing advertising. Let me explain myself...

I don't think it is normal to tell a woman she has to lose weight but also to be at ease with herself and in the mean-time, show her how to bake the most decadent chocolate cake to eat after a meal in our favorite fast-food restaurant. Of course, it is absolutely ridiculous! There is no logic at all between these bits of advice, I think we agree. Yet, when you turn your T.V. on or flip through a magazine, or even take the subway, you can see different kinds of ads, beautifully displayed before your eyes only in order to sell you something: a diet, a gym membership, a restaurant, a magnificent watch to go with your perfectly defined body.

Let's play a little game, would you? Imagine you are on your phone and you decide to check out your Instagram. If you are a woman, you are most likely to be following different types of bloggers but also some actresses, even models and in the middle, there's you. You really love those very attractive images showing expensive stuff worn by attractive people in stunning places and you think "Wow, they must be really lucky because they have everything." Well, all of that is an illusion, simply a window dressing. And even if you know it's just for the looks, like the ads in the subway, all of that is carefully chosen to make you dream, to sell you something, someone, some brand, some lifestyle. Believing that the woman in the very expensive bathing suit, in front of a Santorini sunset, who is eating MacDonalds for dinner, is additionally funny as hell and can make everyone like her great personality is a golden myth that we, all, want to believe. So we take a look at ourselves and start to think shit about our sparkle-free life.

I would like to say that, even though it's a very beautiful illusion, it is only that: an illusion. As dreamy as a cover can be, it could never be as special and lively as something with flaws.
